Send a letter to Bulgaria from Sweden
By BrevredaktionenFact-checked
A letter from Sweden to Bulgaria costs 88 SEK as standard and 128 SEK as express, and normally takes 5–9 vardagar. Bulgarian addresses use Cyrillic script, but consistent Latin transliteration is accepted and easier for Swedish postal sorting. Write the country name in Swedish on the last line — BULGARIEN — because the letter is sorted in Sweden first. Write it here and we print and post it.
How do you address a letter to Bulgaria from Sweden?
You can write the address in either Cyrillic or Latin script. If you choose Latin script, the transliteration must be consistent throughout the address.
The postal code has four digits and appears before the city name.
Apartment numbers are written as 'ap.' after the street number. Residential districts in cities like Sofia are often indicated with 'zh.k.' (which stands for жилищен комплекс, or housing complex).
The final line must read BULGARIEN in capital letters. This is the Swedish name for the country—essential because your letter is sorted in Sweden before it leaves for Bulgaria.
While Cyrillic is the official script, using Latin letters throughout (including for BULGARIEN) ensures smoother processing by Swedish postal workers who will handle your letter first.
The last line is always the country name in Swedish: BULGARIEN. This surprises people who write the rest of the address in English, but the letter is sorted in Sweden before it leaves the country, and Swedish sorting reads Swedish. Everything above that line should look exactly as it would if the letter had been posted inside Bulgaria, because a postal worker there is the one who has to read it.
What goes wrong on letters sent to Bulgaria?
Almost every letter that fails to arrive has an address problem, not a transport problem. These are the mistakes that keep coming back on mail posted from Sweden to Bulgaria:
- Writing the entire address in Cyrillic including the country line, which Swedish sorters cannot read reliably
- Omitting the zh.k. (жк.) district designation in Sofia's residential areas, making the address incomplete
- Mixing Cyrillic and Latin scripts inconsistently within the same address
- Placing the postal code after the city name instead of before it
- Writing 'Bulgaria' in English on the last line instead of BULGARIEN in Swedish
Always add a sender address. A letter with a correct sender comes back to you if the address is wrong, and you can then send it again. Without one, the letter is simply gone.
How long does a letter from Sweden to Bulgaria take?
Normal delivery is 5–9 vardagar, counted from the moment we hand the letter to PostNord — not from the moment you order. Order before 11:45 on a weekday and the letter is handed in the same day.
Most of the variation comes from distribution inside Bulgaria rather than from the flight. A letter to a major city arrives faster than one to a rural address in the same country.
What does it cost to send a letter to Bulgaria?
A standard letter to Bulgaria costs 88 SEK and an express letter 128 SEK. Printing, paper, envelope, postage and hand-in to PostNord are all included. The price is the same to every country, so you never need to know which postal zone Bulgaria belongs to.
PostNord divides the world into seven zones if you buy stamps and post the letter yourself, which is why other services charge different amounts for different countries. The table below shows both options.
| Price | Normal delivery time | |
|---|---|---|
| Posta Brev, standard | 49 SEK + 39 SEK = 88 SEK | 5–9 vardagar |
| Posta Brev, express | 89 SEK + 39 SEK = 128 SEK | Earlier hand-in, same postal route |
| Own stamp, up to 50 g | 44 SEK | 5–9 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 100 g | 66 SEK | 5–9 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 250 g | 110 SEK (92 SEK via postnord.se) | 5–9 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 500 g | 140 SEK (115 SEK via postnord.se) | 5–9 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 1,000 g | 200 SEK (180 SEK via postnord.se) | 5–9 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 2,000 g | 240 SEK (220 SEK via postnord.se) | 5–9 vardagar |
How does the post work in Bulgaria?
Български пощи (Bulgarian Posts) is the national postal operator. In recent years, the service has consolidated operations around its network of post offices, particularly in smaller towns and rural areas.
As a result of this consolidation, home delivery is less common outside major cities. In many smaller communities, recipients collect their mail from the local post office rather than receiving it at their door. This doesn't affect your sending process, but it's worth knowing if you're expecting a reply—your recipient may need to visit their post office to collect it.
Can you send registered mail to Bulgaria?
Registered international mail (Rek utrikes) may contain documents only, weighs no more than 2 kg and carries liability up to 2,000 SEK. It can be tracked to most countries, and only one recipient may be named.
It is the right service for notices of termination, powers of attorney and legal documents where you need proof that the letter was sent. The country name still has to be written in Swedish on a registered letter — BULGARIEN on the last line.
What you may not send
Banknotes and coins may not be sent in an international letter, in any currency and for any amount. Dangerous goods are prohibited. Goods sent in a letter to a country outside the EU require a customs declaration and a barcode that an ordinary letter does not carry.
We therefore send documents and personal letters only. That is also what keeps the service simple: no customs forms, no weighing and no questions about the contents.
