Send a letter to Cyprus from Sweden
By BrevredaktionenFact-checked
A letter from Sweden to Cyprus costs 88 SEK as standard and 128 SEK as express, and normally takes 5–10 vardagar. Cypriot postcodes have four digits and go before the city name, and P.O. Boxes are extremely common even for private addresses. Write the country name in Swedish on the last line — CYPERN — because the letter is sorted in Sweden first. Write it here and we print and post it.
How do you address a letter to Cyprus from Sweden?
The postcode consists of four digits and is written on the line before the city or town name.
P.O. Box addresses are very common in Cyprus, even for private individuals, and replace the street address entirely when used.
Do not combine a P.O. Box number with a street address—use one or the other.
The final line of the address must read CYPERN in Swedish and in capital letters, because your letter is sorted in Sweden before leaving the country.
Addresses in the northern part of the island are handled by a separate postal system and may be difficult or impossible to reach via the regular postal network.
The last line is always the country name in Swedish: CYPERN. This surprises people who write the rest of the address in English, but the letter is sorted in Sweden before it leaves the country, and Swedish sorting reads Swedish. Everything above that line should look exactly as it would if the letter had been posted inside Cyprus, because a postal worker there is the one who has to read it.
What goes wrong on letters sent to Cyprus?
Almost every letter that fails to arrive has an address problem, not a transport problem. These are the mistakes that keep coming back on mail posted from Sweden to Cyprus:
- Writing both a P.O. Box and a street address on the same envelope.
- Putting the postcode after the city name instead of before it.
- Writing CYPRUS instead of CYPERN on the last line, causing sorting delays in Sweden.
- Assuming that addresses in northern Cyprus can be reached through the standard postal route.
- Forgetting to include the four-digit postcode altogether.
Always add a sender address. A letter with a correct sender comes back to you if the address is wrong, and you can then send it again. Without one, the letter is simply gone.
How long does a letter from Sweden to Cyprus take?
Normal delivery is 5–10 vardagar, counted from the moment we hand the letter to PostNord — not from the moment you order. Order before 11:45 on a weekday and the letter is handed in the same day.
Most of the variation comes from distribution inside Cyprus rather than from the flight. A letter to a major city arrives faster than one to a rural address in the same country.
What does it cost to send a letter to Cyprus?
A standard letter to Cyprus costs 88 SEK and an express letter 128 SEK. Printing, paper, envelope, postage and hand-in to PostNord are all included. The price is the same to every country, so you never need to know which postal zone Cyprus belongs to.
PostNord divides the world into seven zones if you buy stamps and post the letter yourself, which is why other services charge different amounts for different countries. The table below shows both options.
| Price | Normal delivery time | |
|---|---|---|
| Posta Brev, standard | 49 SEK + 39 SEK = 88 SEK | 5–10 vardagar |
| Posta Brev, express | 89 SEK + 39 SEK = 128 SEK | Earlier hand-in, same postal route |
| Own stamp, up to 50 g | 44 SEK | 5–10 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 100 g | 66 SEK | 5–10 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 250 g | 110 SEK (92 SEK via postnord.se) | 5–10 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 500 g | 140 SEK (115 SEK via postnord.se) | 5–10 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 1,000 g | 200 SEK (180 SEK via postnord.se) | 5–10 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 2,000 g | 240 SEK (220 SEK via postnord.se) | 5–10 vardagar |
How does the post work in Cyprus?
Cyprus Post operates a well-functioning postal network across the southern part of the island, serving the Republic of Cyprus. The service is reliable and well-integrated with international postal systems, with airmail being the primary method for post arriving from Europe.
Most mail from Sweden arrives by air and is processed through sorting centres before being distributed locally. Delivery times are generally consistent to addresses in the government-controlled areas. P.O. Boxes are widespread and often preferred over street delivery, particularly in residential areas and smaller towns.
It's important to note that the northern part of Cyprus is administered separately and uses a different postal system. Mail sent via the Republic of Cyprus postal service may not reach addresses in the north, or may face significant delays and complications. If you're sending to the northern area, verify the delivery route with your recipient beforehand.
Can you send registered mail to Cyprus?
Registered international mail (Rek utrikes) may contain documents only, weighs no more than 2 kg and carries liability up to 2,000 SEK. It can be tracked to most countries, and only one recipient may be named.
It is the right service for notices of termination, powers of attorney and legal documents where you need proof that the letter was sent. The country name still has to be written in Swedish on a registered letter — CYPERN on the last line.
What you may not send
Banknotes and coins may not be sent in an international letter, in any currency and for any amount. Dangerous goods are prohibited. Goods sent in a letter to a country outside the EU require a customs declaration and a barcode that an ordinary letter does not carry.
We therefore send documents and personal letters only. That is also what keeps the service simple: no customs forms, no weighing and no questions about the contents.
