Send a letter to Hungary from Sweden

By BrevredaktionenFact-checked

A letter from Sweden to Hungary costs 88 SEK as standard and 128 SEK as express, and normally takes 4–7 vardagar. Hungarian names are written surname first, and you must keep that order on the envelope. Write the country name in Swedish on the last line — UNGERN — because the letter is sorted in Sweden first. Write it here and we print and post it.

How do you address a letter to Hungary from Sweden?

Hungarian personal names place the family name before the given name: Nagy Péter means Mr Nagy, given name Péter. Do not reverse this order when writing the address.

Street names come before the type descriptor, then the house number: Kossuth Lajos utca 12 (where utca means street, út means road, and tér means square).

The postal code has four digits and appears before the city name. In Budapest, the second and third digits indicate the district: 1053 refers to District V.

The final line of the address must read UNGERN in capital letters—the Swedish name for Hungary—because the letter is sorted in Sweden before leaving the country.

Nagy Péter
Kossuth Lajos utca 12
1053 BUDAPEST
UNGERN

The last line is always the country name in Swedish: UNGERN. This surprises people who write the rest of the address in English, but the letter is sorted in Sweden before it leaves the country, and Swedish sorting reads Swedish. Everything above that line should look exactly as it would if the letter had been posted inside Hungary, because a postal worker there is the one who has to read it.

What goes wrong on letters sent to Hungary?

Almost every letter that fails to arrive has an address problem, not a transport problem. These are the mistakes that keep coming back on mail posted from Sweden to Hungary:

  • Reversing Hungarian names to put the given name first, as in English conventions.
  • Writing utca, út or tér before the street name instead of after it.
  • Using 'HUNGARY' on the last line instead of UNGERN, which causes sorting delays in Sweden.
  • Forgetting that the postal code comes before the city name, not after.

Always add a sender address. A letter with a correct sender comes back to you if the address is wrong, and you can then send it again. Without one, the letter is simply gone.

How long does a letter from Sweden to Hungary take?

Normal delivery is 4–7 vardagar, counted from the moment we hand the letter to PostNord — not from the moment you order. Order before 11:45 on a weekday and the letter is handed in the same day.

Most of the variation comes from distribution inside Hungary rather than from the flight. A letter to a major city arrives faster than one to a rural address in the same country.

What does it cost to send a letter to Hungary?

A standard letter to Hungary costs 88 SEK and an express letter 128 SEK. Printing, paper, envelope, postage and hand-in to PostNord are all included. The price is the same to every country, so you never need to know which postal zone Hungary belongs to.

PostNord divides the world into seven zones if you buy stamps and post the letter yourself, which is why other services charge different amounts for different countries. The table below shows both options.

How does the post work in Hungary?

Magyar Posta, the national postal operator of Hungary, delivers mail five days a week across the country. Budapest benefits from efficient urban sorting and delivery infrastructure, with most mail moving quickly through the capital's well-established postal network.

Rural areas, particularly in eastern Hungary, may experience slightly longer delivery times due to greater distances and less frequent service routes. Once your letter clears Swedish customs and arrives at Magyar Posta's sorting centres, domestic handling is generally reliable, though delivery speed varies by region.

Can you send registered mail to Hungary?

Registered international mail (Rek utrikes) may contain documents only, weighs no more than 2 kg and carries liability up to 2,000 SEK. It can be tracked to most countries, and only one recipient may be named.

It is the right service for notices of termination, powers of attorney and legal documents where you need proof that the letter was sent. The country name still has to be written in Swedish on a registered letter — UNGERN on the last line.

What you may not send

Banknotes and coins may not be sent in an international letter, in any currency and for any amount. Dangerous goods are prohibited. Goods sent in a letter to a country outside the EU require a customs declaration and a barcode that an ordinary letter does not carry.

We therefore send documents and personal letters only. That is also what keeps the service simple: no customs forms, no weighing and no questions about the contents.
