Send a letter to Ireland from Sweden

An Eircode consists of seven characters in two blocks, such as A94 X2R7, with a space between them. Unlike postcodes in other countries, each Eircode is unique to one individual address, not a neighbourhood or street.

If you have the Eircode, the letter will reach the correct address even if other parts of the address are incomplete or slightly wrong. Always ask the recipient for their Eircode if possible.

Without an Eircode, you must include the county line: Co. Cork, Co. Galway, Co. Mayo, and so on. In rural areas, many houses have no street name or number, so the townland name plus county becomes essential.

Dublin also has older district numbers like Dublin 4 or Dublin 8, which are still widely used in speech and writing. You can include these even when an Eircode is present.

The final line of the envelope must read IRLAND in capital letters, written in Swedish, because the letter is sorted in Sweden before leaving the country. Do not confuse the Republic of Ireland with Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom and uses British postcodes.

The last line is always the country name in Swedish: IRLAND. This surprises people who write the rest of the address in English, but the letter is sorted in Sweden before it leaves the country, and Swedish sorting reads Swedish. Everything above that line should look exactly as it would if the letter had been posted inside Ireland, because a postal worker there is the one who has to read it.

Almost every letter that fails to arrive has an address problem, not a transport problem. These are the mistakes that keep coming back on mail posted from Sweden to Ireland:

Always add a sender address. A letter with a correct sender comes back to you if the address is wrong, and you can then send it again. Without one, the letter is simply gone.

Most of the variation comes from distribution inside Ireland rather than from the flight. A letter to a major city arrives faster than one to a rural address in the same country.

An Post, Ireland's national postal service, introduced Eircode in 2015 to solve a longstanding problem: roughly one-third of addresses in Ireland were not unique. An Post's sorting machines can route a letter with an Eircode even if the rest of the address is incomplete. Without it, delivery in rural areas depends entirely on the sorter's local knowledge, the townland name, and the county.

Standard delivery from Sweden to Ireland takes 3–7 working days once Posta Brev hands your letter to PostNord. Always write IRLAND in Swedish on the last line of the envelope, as this ensures correct sorting within Sweden before the letter leaves the country.

Registered international mail (Rek utrikes) may contain documents only, weighs no more than 2 kg and carries liability up to 2,000 SEK. It can be tracked to most countries, and only one recipient may be named.

It is the right service for notices of termination, powers of attorney and legal documents where you need proof that the letter was sent. The country name still has to be written in Swedish on a registered letter — IRLAND on the last line.

Banknotes and coins may not be sent in an international letter, in any currency and for any amount. Dangerous goods are prohibited. Goods sent in a letter to a country outside the EU require a customs declaration and a barcode that an ordinary letter does not carry.
