Send a letter to Latvia from Sweden
By BrevredaktionenFact-checked
A letter from Sweden to Latvia costs 88 SEK as standard and 128 SEK as express, and normally takes 3–7 vardagar. The Latvian postal code is written LV-1050 and comes after the city name, not before. Write the country name in Swedish on the last line — LETTLAND — because the letter is sorted in Sweden first. Write it here and we print and post it.
How do you address a letter to Latvia from Sweden?
The postal code must include the LV- prefix and appears after the city name, often on the same line: RĪGA, LV-1050.
The street word iela (street) comes after the street name: Brīvības iela. The house number follows, and apartment numbers come after a hyphen.
Latvian diacritical characters ā, č, ē, ģ, ī, ķ, ļ, ņ, š, ū and ž must be written out in full.
The final line of the address must read LETTLAND in uppercase—this is the Swedish name for Latvia, required because the letter is sorted in Sweden before leaving the country.
Even though you're writing in English, using LETTLAND (not LATVIA) on the last line ensures Swedish postal workers route your letter correctly to the international stream.
The last line is always the country name in Swedish: LETTLAND. This surprises people who write the rest of the address in English, but the letter is sorted in Sweden before it leaves the country, and Swedish sorting reads Swedish. Everything above that line should look exactly as it would if the letter had been posted inside Latvia, because a postal worker there is the one who has to read it.
What goes wrong on letters sent to Latvia?
Almost every letter that fails to arrive has an address problem, not a transport problem. These are the mistakes that keep coming back on mail posted from Sweden to Latvia:
- Placing the postal code before the city name, as you would in Sweden
- Omitting the LV- prefix from the postal code
- Writing LATVIA instead of LETTLAND on the final address line
- Omitting Latvian diacritical marks from street and city names
- Putting the street word iela before the street name instead of after
Always add a sender address. A letter with a correct sender comes back to you if the address is wrong, and you can then send it again. Without one, the letter is simply gone.
How long does a letter from Sweden to Latvia take?
Normal delivery is 3–7 vardagar, counted from the moment we hand the letter to PostNord — not from the moment you order. Order before 11:45 on a weekday and the letter is handed in the same day.
Most of the variation comes from distribution inside Latvia rather than from the flight. A letter to a major city arrives faster than one to a rural address in the same country.
What does it cost to send a letter to Latvia?
A standard letter to Latvia costs 88 SEK and an express letter 128 SEK. Printing, paper, envelope, postage and hand-in to PostNord are all included. The price is the same to every country, so you never need to know which postal zone Latvia belongs to.
PostNord divides the world into seven zones if you buy stamps and post the letter yourself, which is why other services charge different amounts for different countries. The table below shows both options.
| Price | Normal delivery time | |
|---|---|---|
| Posta Brev, standard | 49 SEK + 39 SEK = 88 SEK | 3–7 vardagar |
| Posta Brev, express | 89 SEK + 39 SEK = 128 SEK | Earlier hand-in, same postal route |
| Own stamp, up to 50 g | 44 SEK | 3–7 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 100 g | 66 SEK | 3–7 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 250 g | 110 SEK (92 SEK via postnord.se) | 3–7 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 500 g | 140 SEK (115 SEK via postnord.se) | 3–7 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 1,000 g | 200 SEK (180 SEK via postnord.se) | 3–7 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 2,000 g | 240 SEK (220 SEK via postnord.se) | 3–7 vardagar |
How does the post work in Latvia?
Latvijas Pasts is the national postal operator of Latvia, handling domestic and international mail across the country. Delivery schedules vary depending on location, with urban areas receiving post five days a week while rural communities may see deliveries only a few times per week.
Once your letter leaves Sweden, Latvijas Pasts takes over for final delivery within Latvia. The 3–7 working day timeframe covers the entire journey from our hand-in in Sweden to arrival at the Latvian address. Rural addresses may experience slightly longer delivery times due to the less frequent distribution schedules in those areas.
Can you send registered mail to Latvia?
Registered international mail (Rek utrikes) may contain documents only, weighs no more than 2 kg and carries liability up to 2,000 SEK. It can be tracked to most countries, and only one recipient may be named.
It is the right service for notices of termination, powers of attorney and legal documents where you need proof that the letter was sent. The country name still has to be written in Swedish on a registered letter — LETTLAND on the last line.
What you may not send
Banknotes and coins may not be sent in an international letter, in any currency and for any amount. Dangerous goods are prohibited. Goods sent in a letter to a country outside the EU require a customs declaration and a barcode that an ordinary letter does not carry.
We therefore send documents and personal letters only. That is also what keeps the service simple: no customs forms, no weighing and no questions about the contents.
