Send a letter to Poland from Sweden

By BrevredaktionenFact-checked

A letter from Sweden to Poland costs 88 SEK as standard and 128 SEK as express, and normally takes 3–6 vardagar. Polish postal codes must be written with a hyphen in the format 00-950, or sorting machines may misread them. Write the country name in Swedish on the last line — POLEN — because the letter is sorted in Sweden first. Write it here and we print and post it.

How do you address a letter to Poland from Sweden?

Street addresses begin with ul. (ulica, street), al. (aleja, avenue) or pl. (plac, square). These abbreviations are part of the official address and must be written out.

The house number follows the street name, and the flat number comes after a forward slash: 15/3 means house 15, flat 3.

The postal code is written with a hyphen in the format 00-950 and appears before the city name. Without the hyphen, automated sorting may fail to read it correctly.

Polish diacritics ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź and ż must be used. In particular, ł is not the same letter as l and must be written correctly in addresses.

The final line must read POLEN in capital letters—this is the Swedish name for Poland and is required because your letter is sorted in Sweden before leaving the country.

Pan Piotr Kowalski
ul. Marszałkowska 15/3
00-950 WARSZAWA
POLEN

The last line is always the country name in Swedish: POLEN. This surprises people who write the rest of the address in English, but the letter is sorted in Sweden before it leaves the country, and Swedish sorting reads Swedish. Everything above that line should look exactly as it would if the letter had been posted inside Poland, because a postal worker there is the one who has to read it.

What goes wrong on letters sent to Poland?

Almost every letter that fails to arrive has an address problem, not a transport problem. These are the mistakes that keep coming back on mail posted from Sweden to Poland:

  • Omitting the hyphen in the postal code, which confuses sorting machines.
  • Leaving out ul. before the street name.
  • Replacing ł with l in place names like Łódź, creating an incorrect address.
  • Writing 'POLAND' on the last line instead of POLEN—the Swedish form is required for correct sorting in Sweden.

Always add a sender address. A letter with a correct sender comes back to you if the address is wrong, and you can then send it again. Without one, the letter is simply gone.

How long does a letter from Sweden to Poland take?

Normal delivery is 3–6 vardagar, counted from the moment we hand the letter to PostNord — not from the moment you order. Order before 11:45 on a weekday and the letter is handed in the same day.

Most of the variation comes from distribution inside Poland rather than from the flight. A letter to a major city arrives faster than one to a rural address in the same country.

What does it cost to send a letter to Poland?

A standard letter to Poland costs 88 SEK and an express letter 128 SEK. Printing, paper, envelope, postage and hand-in to PostNord are all included. The price is the same to every country, so you never need to know which postal zone Poland belongs to.

PostNord divides the world into seven zones if you buy stamps and post the letter yourself, which is why other services charge different amounts for different countries. The table below shows both options.

How does the post work in Poland?

Poczta Polska, the Polish postal operator, maintains a dense network of post offices and delivery points across the country. Letters to major cities such as Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław and Gdańsk typically move quickly through the system, while deliveries to smaller towns and rural areas may take an extra day or two due to the distances involved.

Because Poland is a member of the European Union, no customs paperwork is required for letters and documents posted from Sweden. Your letter enters the Polish postal stream directly and is delivered as domestic mail once it crosses the border.

Can you send registered mail to Poland?

Registered international mail (Rek utrikes) may contain documents only, weighs no more than 2 kg and carries liability up to 2,000 SEK. It can be tracked to most countries, and only one recipient may be named.

It is the right service for notices of termination, powers of attorney and legal documents where you need proof that the letter was sent. The country name still has to be written in Swedish on a registered letter — POLEN on the last line.

What you may not send

Banknotes and coins may not be sent in an international letter, in any currency and for any amount. Dangerous goods are prohibited. Goods sent in a letter to a country outside the EU require a customs declaration and a barcode that an ordinary letter does not carry.

We therefore send documents and personal letters only. That is also what keeps the service simple: no customs forms, no weighing and no questions about the contents.
