Send a letter to Argentina from Sweden

By BrevredaktionenFact-checked

A letter from Sweden to Argentina costs 88 SEK as standard and 128 SEK as express, and normally takes 10–20 vardagar. Argentine postal codes use the format C1425DKE—one letter, four digits, and three letters—not just four numbers. Write the country name in Swedish on the last line — ARGENTINA — because the letter is sorted in Sweden first. Write it here and we print and post it.

How do you address a letter to Argentina from Sweden?

Write the street name first, followed by the house number, then Piso (floor) and Depto (apartment) if applicable.

The postal code (CPA) follows the format: one letter, four digits, and three letters, such as C1425DKE. You may still encounter the older four-digit format, but the full CPA code is more precise.

The recipient's name goes on the first line, followed by the street address with floor and apartment details on subsequent lines, then the postal code and city.

The final line must read ARGENTINA in capital letters—and crucially, this must be written in Swedish (which happens to be the same spelling). This is because your letter is sorted in Sweden before leaving the country, so Swedish postal workers need to recognise the destination.

Sr. Diego Fernández
Av. Corrientes 1234, Piso 5 Depto B
C1043AAZ BUENOS AIRES
ARGENTINA

The last line is always the country name in Swedish: ARGENTINA. This surprises people who write the rest of the address in English, but the letter is sorted in Sweden before it leaves the country, and Swedish sorting reads Swedish. Everything above that line should look exactly as it would if the letter had been posted inside Argentina, because a postal worker there is the one who has to read it.

What goes wrong on letters sent to Argentina?

Almost every letter that fails to arrive has an address problem, not a transport problem. These are the mistakes that keep coming back on mail posted from Sweden to Argentina:

  • Writing only the four-digit portion of the postal code instead of the full CPA format with letters.
  • Omitting the floor (Piso) and apartment (Depto) details, especially for addresses in Buenos Aires where they're essential.
  • Writing the country name in English on the last line instead of in Swedish—it must be sorted in Sweden first.
  • Placing the house number before the street name, following English conventions rather than Argentine format.
  • Using an outdated four-digit postal code when the recipient has provided the newer, more accurate CPA code.

Always add a sender address. A letter with a correct sender comes back to you if the address is wrong, and you can then send it again. Without one, the letter is simply gone.

How long does a letter from Sweden to Argentina take?

Normal delivery is 10–20 vardagar, counted from the moment we hand the letter to PostNord — not from the moment you order. Order before 11:45 on a weekday and the letter is handed in the same day.

Most of the variation comes from distribution inside Argentina rather than from the flight. A letter to a major city arrives faster than one to a rural address in the same country.

What does it cost to send a letter to Argentina?

A standard letter to Argentina costs 88 SEK and an express letter 128 SEK. Printing, paper, envelope, postage and hand-in to PostNord are all included. The price is the same to every country, so you never need to know which postal zone Argentina belongs to.

PostNord divides the world into seven zones if you buy stamps and post the letter yourself, which is why other services charge different amounts for different countries. The table below shows both options.

How does the post work in Argentina?

Correo Argentino is the national postal operator responsible for delivering mail throughout Argentina. In urban centres like Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Rosario, Correo Argentino provides regular door-to-door delivery and maintains a network of post offices for collections and services.

In more remote and sparsely populated provinces, however, delivery infrastructure is limited. Many residents in rural areas rely on post office boxes (casillas) rather than home delivery. If you're sending to a less populated region, confirm with your recipient whether they have street delivery or use a post office box, as this will affect how you format the address.

Can you send registered mail to Argentina?

Registered international mail (Rek utrikes) may contain documents only, weighs no more than 2 kg and carries liability up to 2,000 SEK. It can be tracked to most countries, and only one recipient may be named.

It is the right service for notices of termination, powers of attorney and legal documents where you need proof that the letter was sent. The country name still has to be written in Swedish on a registered letter — ARGENTINA on the last line.

What you may not send

Banknotes and coins may not be sent in an international letter, in any currency and for any amount. Dangerous goods are prohibited. Goods sent in a letter to a country outside the EU require a customs declaration and a barcode that an ordinary letter does not carry.

We therefore send documents and personal letters only. That is also what keeps the service simple: no customs forms, no weighing and no questions about the contents.
