Send a letter to Brazil from Sweden

By BrevredaktionenFact-checked

A letter from Sweden to Brazil costs 88 SEK as standard and 128 SEK as express, and normally takes 10–20 vardagar. The CEP postal code goes before the city name, and you must include the two-letter state code after the city. Write the country name in Swedish on the last line — BRASILIEN — because the letter is sorted in Sweden first. Write it here and we print and post it.

How do you address a letter to Brazil from Sweden?

Write the street name first, followed by the house number: Av. Paulista 1578. For apartments, use Apto. followed by the number.

The bairro (neighbourhood or district) goes on its own line and is required in most larger cities.

The CEP postal code has eight digits in the format 00000-000 (five digits, hyphen, three digits) and appears before the city name on the same line.

After the city name, add the two-letter state code preceded by a space and hyphen: - SP for São Paulo, - RJ for Rio de Janeiro, etc.

The final line must read BRASILIEN in capital letters—this is the Swedish name for Brazil, required because your letter is sorted in Sweden before leaving the country.

Sr. Carlos Silva
Av. Paulista 1578, Apto 42
Bela Vista
01310-200 SÃO PAULO - SP
BRASILIEN

The last line is always the country name in Swedish: BRASILIEN. This surprises people who write the rest of the address in English, but the letter is sorted in Sweden before it leaves the country, and Swedish sorting reads Swedish. Everything above that line should look exactly as it would if the letter had been posted inside Brazil, because a postal worker there is the one who has to read it.

What goes wrong on letters sent to Brazil?

Almost every letter that fails to arrive has an address problem, not a transport problem. These are the mistakes that keep coming back on mail posted from Sweden to Brazil:

  • Writing the CEP without the hyphen (12345678 instead of 12345-678)
  • Leaving out the state code after the city name
  • Omitting the bairro line in addresses for major cities
  • Writing 'BRAZIL' instead of 'BRASILIEN' on the last line
  • Placing the CEP after the city instead of before it

Always add a sender address. A letter with a correct sender comes back to you if the address is wrong, and you can then send it again. Without one, the letter is simply gone.

How long does a letter from Sweden to Brazil take?

Normal delivery is 10–20 vardagar, counted from the moment we hand the letter to PostNord — not from the moment you order. Order before 11:45 on a weekday and the letter is handed in the same day.

Most of the variation comes from distribution inside Brazil rather than from the flight. A letter to a major city arrives faster than one to a rural address in the same country.

What does it cost to send a letter to Brazil?

A standard letter to Brazil costs 88 SEK and an express letter 128 SEK. Printing, paper, envelope, postage and hand-in to PostNord are all included. The price is the same to every country, so you never need to know which postal zone Brazil belongs to.

PostNord divides the world into seven zones if you buy stamps and post the letter yourself, which is why other services charge different amounts for different countries. The table below shows both options.

How does the post work in Brazil?

Correios operates the largest postal network across the entire South American continent, connecting cities, rural communities, and remote regions across Brazil's vast territory. Despite this extensive infrastructure, distances are enormous—deliveries to the Amazon region often add several weeks to standard timeframes.

Customs handling is strict, even for items sent as letters. If your envelope is suspected of containing goods rather than documents, it may be opened and held for inspection. We strongly recommend sending only documents, personal letters, and paper correspondence to avoid delays or confiscation.

Can you send registered mail to Brazil?

Registered international mail (Rek utrikes) may contain documents only, weighs no more than 2 kg and carries liability up to 2,000 SEK. It can be tracked to most countries, and only one recipient may be named.

It is the right service for notices of termination, powers of attorney and legal documents where you need proof that the letter was sent. The country name still has to be written in Swedish on a registered letter — BRASILIEN on the last line.

What you may not send

Banknotes and coins may not be sent in an international letter, in any currency and for any amount. Dangerous goods are prohibited. Goods sent in a letter to a country outside the EU require a customs declaration and a barcode that an ordinary letter does not carry.

We therefore send documents and personal letters only. That is also what keeps the service simple: no customs forms, no weighing and no questions about the contents.
