Send a letter to Peru from Sweden
By BrevredaktionenFact-checked
A letter from Sweden to Peru costs 88 SEK as standard and 128 SEK as express, and normally takes 12–25 vardagar. The district (distrito) must be written on its own separate address line—Lima alone has over forty districts with distinct postal zones. Write the country name in Swedish on the last line — PERU — because the letter is sorted in Sweden first. Write it here and we print and post it.
How do you address a letter to Peru from Sweden?
Write the street name first, followed by the house number. Apartments are indicated as 'Dpto.' with the apartment number.
The district (distrito) goes on its own line. In Lima, you may also see the district number written after the city name, for example: LIMA 18.
The final line must read PERU in capital letters. Remember: this is written in Swedish because your letter is sorted in Sweden before leaving the country, even though you're writing the rest of the address in the local format.
Do not confuse district numbers with postal codes—they serve different purposes in the Peruvian addressing system.
Omitting the district in Lima addresses is one of the most common errors and can significantly delay delivery.
The last line is always the country name in Swedish: PERU. This surprises people who write the rest of the address in English, but the letter is sorted in Sweden before it leaves the country, and Swedish sorting reads Swedish. Everything above that line should look exactly as it would if the letter had been posted inside Peru, because a postal worker there is the one who has to read it.
What goes wrong on letters sent to Peru?
Almost every letter that fails to arrive has an address problem, not a transport problem. These are the mistakes that keep coming back on mail posted from Sweden to Peru:
- Leaving out the distrito line entirely, especially for Lima addresses
- Confusing the district number with a postal code
- Writing 'PERU' in English instead of Swedish on the final line
- Placing the apartment number before the street name instead of using the Dpto. format
- Failing to put the district on a separate line
Always add a sender address. A letter with a correct sender comes back to you if the address is wrong, and you can then send it again. Without one, the letter is simply gone.
How long does a letter from Sweden to Peru take?
Normal delivery is 12–25 vardagar, counted from the moment we hand the letter to PostNord — not from the moment you order. Order before 11:45 on a weekday and the letter is handed in the same day.
Most of the variation comes from distribution inside Peru rather than from the flight. A letter to a major city arrives faster than one to a rural address in the same country.
What does it cost to send a letter to Peru?
A standard letter to Peru costs 88 SEK and an express letter 128 SEK. Printing, paper, envelope, postage and hand-in to PostNord are all included. The price is the same to every country, so you never need to know which postal zone Peru belongs to.
PostNord divides the world into seven zones if you buy stamps and post the letter yourself, which is why other services charge different amounts for different countries. The table below shows both options.
| Price | Normal delivery time | |
|---|---|---|
| Posta Brev, standard | 49 SEK + 39 SEK = 88 SEK | 12–25 vardagar |
| Posta Brev, express | 89 SEK + 39 SEK = 128 SEK | Earlier hand-in, same postal route |
| Own stamp, up to 50 g | 44 SEK | 12–25 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 100 g | 66 SEK | 12–25 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 250 g | 110 SEK (92 SEK via postnord.se) | 12–25 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 500 g | 140 SEK (115 SEK via postnord.se) | 12–25 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 1,000 g | 200 SEK (180 SEK via postnord.se) | 12–25 vardagar |
| Own stamp, up to 2,000 g | 240 SEK (220 SEK via postnord.se) | 12–25 vardagar |
How does the post work in Peru?
Peru's national postal service, Serpost, handles mail delivery throughout the country, but coverage varies significantly by region. In urban areas like Lima, Arequipa, and Cusco, delivery is generally reliable and reaches street addresses. However, outside major cities, the postal network becomes more limited.
In rural areas, particularly in Andean villages and remote communities, Serpost often does not provide door-to-door delivery. Recipients in these areas typically collect their mail from the nearest post office, which may require travelling some distance. This is important to know if you're sending a letter to someone outside Peru's main urban centres—they may need to be informed that they'll need to check their local post office for incoming mail.
Can you send registered mail to Peru?
Registered international mail (Rek utrikes) may contain documents only, weighs no more than 2 kg and carries liability up to 2,000 SEK. It can be tracked to most countries, and only one recipient may be named.
It is the right service for notices of termination, powers of attorney and legal documents where you need proof that the letter was sent. The country name still has to be written in Swedish on a registered letter — PERU on the last line.
What you may not send
Banknotes and coins may not be sent in an international letter, in any currency and for any amount. Dangerous goods are prohibited. Goods sent in a letter to a country outside the EU require a customs declaration and a barcode that an ordinary letter does not carry.
We therefore send documents and personal letters only. That is also what keeps the service simple: no customs forms, no weighing and no questions about the contents.
